Produced by Ken Murray strictly as a vehicle for Laurie Anders, his curvy protégé from his television show and billed above the title and first billed in the cast as Laurie ("I-like-the-wide-open-spaces") Anders, which was her catch-line phrase and how she was introduced and known. This is neither a comedy, satire or parody---missing badly on all attempts at such---and isn't much of a western either, even by bottom-of-the-barrel B-standards. The plot by veteran B-western villain player Bob Duncan, who did manage to write himself the best role in the movie, relative to there being no good roles in this movie, has town banker Anderson, the secret head of an outlaw gang, trying to organize a Cattleman's Association and not getting any takers. He sends for Trigger Gans to act as a persuader. But a mysterious, masked rider known as El Coyote begins to resist. El Coyote is of course Laurie Dawson, daughter of retired Marshal and rancher Ben Dawson, and her El Coyote role ensured that whoever stunt-doubled her would wear pads where no stunt man ever wore them, with the possible later exception of Dean Smith doubling Maureen O'Hara in "McLintock." The heroines that Dave Sharpe doubled in Republic serials weren't built like Laurie Anders. Producer Ken Murray, as a riverboat gambler named Sliding Bill Murray, rolls into town on the same stage as Trigger Gans, and then promptly engages Preston Foster, Johnny Mack Brown, Jimmy Wakely and Buddy Baer (in cameo roles) in a blackout-skit poker game written by himself, which had to have been even more painful for the participants than the viewers. Ralph Staub used to get better stuff than this in his "Screen Snapshots" just roaming around Columbia's backlot and interviewing Smiley Burnette and Ringeye.
I have found this movie to be one of the most entertaining westerns I have ever seen. It is funny even when it is not trying to be. An all star cast, last of the B westerns and it is, in a way, a parody of High Noon with the clocks and Tex singing about sorry starry midnight. The poker game is brilliant ! Every western theme is here except for a mining scene. Talk about flash-backs. Try to figure where you are at any time during the movie. The dance scene with Laurie and Frenchie is something I have never seen before or since. The theme song by Tex would be considered politically incorrect now days. The dual identity of Laurie is over the top. How could one not like this jewel ?
This is the story of the motherless daughter of an undercover marshall(Hoot Gibson) operating a medicine show as a front. At night the girl secretly dons a black outfit, and, as "El Coyote" fights the bad guys. Of course, Daddy has no idea, and once they're vanquished she's quite eager to marry her boyfriend and be a full fledged girl again.

Though it's silly and corny in spots, the movie has good action scenes and some serious violence. This film is not as juvenile as the title might suggest. Both good and bad people die, and the Western atmosphere is not unrealistic. Laurie Anders "the daughter" is extremely attractive, both in looks and manner, (one of my earliest crushes in fact) and most of the other performances are quite good. However, producer Ken Murray's attempts at comedy (in the part of a gambler) fall flat for the most part. Although not overtly satirical, some of the scenes are played with tongue slightly in cheek, usually in an effective manner.

Hardly great cinema but very entertaining, both for young and old, with a good ballad style running theme song. Well worth your time.

The Germans are entering a French Village, driving the Americans out before them. The squad is in retreat as Sgt. Saunders enters a building and discovers a member of his squad, a private named Kogan, cowering in a corner. As he drives Kogan out of the building, an artillery shell lands nearby and a roof-beam falls on Saunder's legs, pinning him to the floor. Pvt. Kogan flees from the town in terror, and informs Lt. Hanley that Saunders was killed. As the squad marches on, Kogan has an attack of conscience and returns to the village to free Saunders, as the Germans are now everywhere within the town.
When the German artillery fires a French village, Sgt. Saunders and his squad are ordered to retreat. Saunders look for Private Kogan, who is hidden in the corner of a building totally scared. Saunders summons him but out of the blue, the building is hit and partially collapses, leaving Saunders with the legs trapped under a beam. He asks Kogan to help him but the yellow private flees, He meets Lt. Hanley and his squad on the border of the village and reports that Saunders is dead. But when Lt. Hanley informs that the squad will counter-attack the village, Kogan decides to head alone to rescue Saunders. But the village is invaded by the Germans.
"The Hard Way Back" is a story about how some people react under pressure. After the Sarge is pinned under a heavy beam inside a bombed out building, Private Larry Kogan (excellently played by Sal Mineo) wants to rescue him but hears Germans out in the street coming their way. He panics and runs out on Saunders. Is this really cowardice or practicality? Kogan makes it back to Lieutenant Hanley and the squad and informs them the Sarge is dead. After taking time out to reconsider, Kogan returns to help Saunders.

As usual, Ed Lakso wrote a fine screenplay while Bernard McEveety directed a fine episode. Heavy artillery scenes are excellent and Saunders-Kogan versus several Germans is a lesson in confidence for Kogan. We can really appreciate the unique talents of Ed Lakso on screen writing because he did not have extensive real life experiences in the genre as so many outstanding writers have had. It took real imagination to conceive this plot & story. Bringing in the beggar was an excellent move to sort of connect pieces of the story and add to the suspense. And give Director McEveety credit for making it believable.

Suspense levels remain high throughout and real fear comes through in Mineo's performance. The Sarge as usual is the epitome of "cool" and helps him through it. They make a good team. Was Kogan a coward or did he know when the deck was stacked against him ? Excellent episode.

"The Hard Way Back" is among the best episodes of "Combat!". Sgt. Saunders behavior and temper is maybe the greatest attraction of this series, and he shines in this episode. The performances and the battle scenes are excellent as usual and the drama lived by Kogan is amazing. My vote is nine.
